An electrical report can be very useful if you are about to purchase a property or if you are considering making major changes.  Old wiring can in some cases be a significant fire risk and so it is best not to take any chances.  An Electrical inspection from an Electrician can involve complete testing of all the circuits to make sure that everything is satisfactory.  This may take a few hours but will often be money well spent.  In the case of very old wiring the Electrician might be able to tell you straight off that the whole lot needs replacing and that the additional cost of testing will probably not be necessary.  In other words an inspection can be a lengthy business or can be very short so make sure you talk in detail with your appointed Electrician before hand to decide what is going to be done and how much it is going to cost.

If you do require a thorough inspection then you will probably need to ask for an Electrical Installation Condition Report (EICR).  This format of report has been developed by the Electrical Safely Council (ESC) and replaces the previous Periodic Inspection Report (PIR).  Filling in the above form will give you a set of contact details for Electricians who will be able to help you.

If you are a landlord then you may require testing of your property to meet legislative requirements.

Should remedial work be required to upgrade an Electrical Installation, and make it compliant with modern standards, your chosen Electrician may be able to help you with this or alternatively you could run a listing request for Local Electricians covering your area.

It is important that electrical installation work is carried out only by persons who are competent.  Such persons are those that have the necessary knowledge, skill and experience to enable them to avoid dangers to themselves and others that electricity can create.  It is strongly recommended that you use an Electrician who is registered with one of the government-approved schemes to carry out any electric installation work that you need doing.

Registered Electricians will work in conformance with the UK national standard, BS 7671 - Requirements for Electrical Installations.  They will issue a safety certificate for their electrical work to confirm that the installation has been designed, constructed, inspected and tested, in accordance with the standard.

You should ensure that your chosen Electrician is registered with one of the following organizations:

BRE Certification Ltd
British Standards Institution
ELECSA Ltd
NAPIT Registration Ltd
NICEIC Group Ltd
SELECT (Scotland)
