What is the difference between garden and landscape design?
Garden Design
Garden designers will design and plan planting schemes and layouts for gardens and landscapes. They usually have a qualification in horticulture. When designing a garden many factors must be taken into consideration such as its location, the soil type and structure, boundaries, surfaces, existing planting, its history and its intended use, sunlight and lighting.
Some gardens may have a specific purpose for example a sensory garden for people with poor site to enjoy which could include plants with a strong scent and are interesting to touch; a raised bed garden for those who are unable to bend down to normal ground level. There are numerous themed gardens – cottage gardens, kitchen gardens, water gardens, rock gardens, contemporary, Mediterranean, drought resistant, low maintenance, celebratory.
Garden designers often talk about soft and hard landscaping. ‘Soft’ refers to things that are green so trees, grass, shrubs, flowers etc and ‘hard’ means paving, fencing, pergolas, retaining walls, basically any hard feature.
Landscape Design
Landscape design looks at the master landscape plan for a property and the specific garden design/ designs within it. Designs tend to lean towards horticultural finesse and expertise, all artistically combined. Similarly to garden design, it is often split into ‘soft’ and ‘hard’scape design. For large projects it is sometimes necessary to involve specialists such as architects, geographers, soil and civil engineers, surveyors or botanists.
What is Landscape Architecture?
Both landscape Designers and Landscape Architects can practise landscape design. There can be a lot of overlap between the two. A 'Chartered Landscape Architect' however is a member of The Landscape Institute (LI). The LI is a chartered body which accredits landscape professionals and university courses. Only professionals who are members of the LI are permitted to use the title ‘Chartered Landscape Architect’
