To get a range of estimates for house removals from contractors in your local area please complete the form above. We will then instantly provide a number of estimates from different suppliers together with their contact details. You will be able to contact them quickly and efficiently. There is no intermediary.

Filling in the above form will instantly give you a set of estimates together with the contact details of removal specialists who cover your area.  These prices will assume that you have an average family house with normal contents.  This will serve as a useful starting point for you.  Your next step will be to make contact with some of these suppliers, discuss your requirement in more detail and obtain detailed quotations.

Things to consider when you are moving

Moving to a new home can be quite an exciting process but at the same time it can be rather tiring and prolonged.  Good planning beforehand will help to make the whole process as smooth as possible.  Things you should consider are as follows:

Start planning as early as possible.  The first thing to do is to have a good clear out and get rid of any items that you no longer want to keep.  Anything that you can discard will result in less packing, reduce the space required in the removal truck, and be one less thing to find a place for in your new home.  We are all continually surrounding ourselves with things that we do not need.  This is a good opportunity to reverse this affliction (even if only momentarily).  Unwanted items can be sold off, given to friends and relatives, or taken to the recycling centre.

Special possessions.  Write up a list of any special items such as high value or fragile items.  You will need this later when you talk to the removal companies.

What is the floor area of your house?  If you can work out the area in square meters this information will be useful when you talk to removal companies.

How much have you really got stored in your attic?  You may find that you have a lot more stuff than you realised and remember that moving all these forgotten items, one by one, down through the loft hatch is not going to be quick.

Investigate removal companies.  Speak to removal companies and discuss your requirements in detail.  You can consider different options and then select the package that will best suit your needs.  Once you have a preferred supplier, the next step will be to arrange for the removal contractor to visit your property, carry out a survey of the contents and produce a detailed quotation.

Are you going to do all the packing yourself or do you need help?  Packing up a house full of possessions is involved and is time consuming.  Paying a bit extra for professional help is usually well worthwhile.

Identify all the possessions that you have that you are unlikely to need over the next three months.  Items such as books, ornaments, pictures, photograph albums, hobby collections etc.  Buy some stiff cardboard boxes and pack these items up before hand and pile them all into the corner of a room to await the moving day.  Don’t forget to write a description of the contents on the side of each box.

Do you have a dog or a cat or any family pets?  Will you move them with you on the same day or send them off to friends, or kennels, for a few days, while the move takes place?

Will your new home have plenty of extra space to dump everything on the day you move in? If not then it might be worth considering sending some items to storage for a few months while you sort out where everything is going to be placed in your new home.

Do any of your larger items of furniture dismantle for easier transportation?  You will need to make sure you have the necessary tools to dismantle them and a small container to put all the loose screws in.  You don’t want to move into a new house and then find that you cannot reassemble the furniture because you are missing all the screws.

Where will the removal lorry park?  You will need to consider the availability of parking at your existing property and at your new property.  If there is likely to be any inconvenience to your neighbours then it may be prudent to give them prior warning.  This will also be a good opportunity to knock on the doors of your new neighbours and introduce yourself.

Make up a detailed map for the truck driver.  Most drivers use satnavs these days but a printed map showing the exact location of the new house should be useful.  You can also note where and how the truck should be packed for unloading.

Things on the day.  Probably best to take a packed lunch and some drinking water.  You will be working flat out all day so eating sandwiches will be much quicker than going off and finding a pub for lunch.

Think about the sequence in which things are loaded onto the truck.  The things that you load onto the truck first will, at the end of the journey, be removed last.  Are there particular items that you want to unload first such as your kitchen table and other large items of furniture?

When you are doing the final packing on the day, it is worth labelling things as you go along.  You can label what is in each box but it is also important to note the room that they will be going into.

Organise the keys carefully.  You need to ensure that your keys are passed on to the buyer of your property and you need to make sure that the keys to the new property will be available.  Just as a precaution, make sure you have the telephone numbers of all the people involved in case you need to ring anyone in a hurry.  You need to avoid arriving at your new property with a lorry full of your belongings, only to find that you are locked out!

Learn the names of your removal men.  You will be spending a lot of time with them throughout the day so it will be easier if you learn their names right from the start.

Don’t get stressed by worrying about the endless list of jobs that will need to be done.  Just steadily work your way through it step by step and focus on the fact that you will complete the process eventually.
