Disability Access Assessments
The Equality Act 2010 (EA)
The Equality Act aims to ensure service providers and businesses consider how their policies, programmes and service delivery affect people with protected characteristics such as age, gender and/or disability. All businesses and public buildings must comply or have a reasonable action plan for compliance with the above act. They have an obligation to make reasonable adjustments to premises or to the way they provide a service to ensure that their business is accessible to people with disabilities. The Equality Act has now replaced the Disability Discrimination Act (DDA).
What is a Disability Access Assessment/Audit?
A disability access assessment or audit is the easiest and most comprehensive way of making sure you meet the needs of your disabled clients, customers and employees. The audit will involve assessing how accessible your business and services are to a disabled person and how you can improve their experience of your business. A company providing such an audit will make you aware of all your responsibilities under the old DDA and the new Equality Act and the most cost-effective ways of meeting them. The nature of your business, the environment, the property and your budget will be considered prior to receiving an audit report.
Where to go for a Disability Access Assessment/Audit
Whatever measures you take to make your business accessible to disabled people, instructing an auditor to undertake a disability access assessment will ensure peace of mind that you are complying with the law and improving accessibility and potential income. By completing the form above you will receive estimates from local suppliers who provide disability access assessments or audits. You should check their auditors have experience of auditing a facility such as your own for disability access.
Ideas to improve your service
Ensure signage is clear and uncluttered to help visually impaired people or those with a learning disability.
If possible, allow your entrance/doorway to open sufficiently for a wheelchair user to gain access (at least 75cm). Alternatively install a bell so staff can be alerted if a disabled person needs assistance to gain entry.
Guide customers around the premises or bring goods/services to them, either within your building or deliver to their home.
Consider providing online or mail ordering.
