1. Find out your current EPC rating

Before you go about improving your home, you first need to work out exactly how energy efficient your home currently is. To do this you’ll need to check out your most recent Energy Performance Certificate and your home’s current rating. You can find this on the government’s EPC register.

2. Start at the top

One of the easiest and non-invasive ways to improve your home’s energy efficiency is by improving your loft insulation. For a moderate investment, it typically involves laying mineral wool insulation between the joists of your loft but can be extremely effective

3. Double glaze your windows

Upgrading your windows is a relatively easy but expensive fix for maintaining heat within the home . Whether by replacing the panes of glass or upgrading to double glazing, preventing any heat being lost through gaps and cracks will help reduce your heating bills and is a step closer to a better EPC rating.

4. Insulate your cavity walls

We all know drafts can come from lofts and windows but have you ever looked at how effective your cavity wall insulation is? If your home was built after 1920 it is more likely that you have cavity walls rather than solid walls. With cavity walls, two walls are built with a gap in between them known as a cavity wall and by injecting insulation material into this cavity, your home will inevitably retain more heat.

5. Invest in a heat pump

Heat pumps are a great way to reduce your energy bills as they catch the heat from the outside and bring it inside the home. Yes they use electricity to do so, but you will no longer have to pay for gas as long as you have installed it correctly.
